The E-Zip is a very solid bike, and much of the sturdiness comes from the sheer weight of the thing. Getting started by pumping and then turn on the throttle switch, the motor kicks in and you are on your way taking hills without strain or sweat.

The bike will arrive partly-assembled in its box. It will take as long to put this bike together as it does to install an electric bicycle motor kit. I would estimate the time frame being around the half hour mark if you are mechanically talented, or an hour if you are no so gifted in the mechanics department. It is not difficult it involves attaching the seat, front wheel and the pedals. It comes with a lead-acid battery, and you might want to plug it in before you start your bike assembly as it will take about 2 to 3 hours for it to come to full charge. The E-ZIp is a heavy bike by itself, and the weight of this battery, and the motor itself make the bike heavy and cumbersome. If you have to haul it upstairs to an apartment or into a building for a job, maybe you should look for a lighter weight bike.

Currie sells a second battery for about $100 dollars, and is easily detachable, and interchangeable. The life of the battery stated in the manual is one year.

For an entry level bike, it is a good deal, but if you plan on doing a lot of riding, you may want to spend a little more, and get a lighter weight bike with better components, and a longer battery life.

Propelled by a new and improved technology, higher oil costs, the style, and the perfunctory for all things green, worldwide sales of bikes driven by battery-powered electrical motors have climbed nearly twenty percent since 2005, a trend projected to accelerate particularly in developing nations, where the middle class is rising. The electric bicycle business is young, but and growing faster than anyone could have projected.

Japan and China combined are the biggest contributors to this trend producing and selling close to 24 million bikes and more growth is anticipated. American electric bicycles manufacturing is working its way up the electric bike ranks too.

Buoyed by a just minted middle class and engine bans in some towns, China is manufacturing electric bicycle in domestic and foreign markets, a figure predicted to climb to twenty-five million by 2009. China that now leads the world in electric bike production and sales. And plenty of its 450 million bike riders are increasingly trading up to electrical.

In the US, consumers are also migrating in larger numbers to e-bikes, drawn in part by lighter and stronger batteries and practical assists like bicycle lanes and lockers. E- bike sales are predicted to double by 2009 to two hundred thousand from 100,000 in 2005. Further out, e-bike sales are up in Vietnam, Thailand, SA, Australia and Eastern Europe. And in bike-friendly Holland, bicyclists in their 60s are selecting e-bikes to remain in shape with less strain.

The coming of Ultra Motors, an English electrical vehicle pretender which just won recognition from Red Herring, a technology site, and from the World Economic Forum, confirms to India’s e-bike potential.

In only 2 months, the company has sold four thousand e-bikes with its strategic partner, Hero, India’s largest bike maker. Ultra is incorporating its better motor, designed by a Russian scientist, into Hero’s bikes ; it plans the same for scooters and rickshaws, for sales of nearly three hundred thousand cars by 2010.

With the world population growing at a rate that makes the need for greener technology a mandatory obligation for humanity, the electric bicycle is a small band aid on a festering wound.
